2009 Independence Bowl:
Texas A&M vs. Georgia Bulldogs
During the bicentennial year of the United States in 1976, the Independence Bowl college football game was inaugurated. Independence Bowl is now a fully established post-season football game sanctioned by the First Division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
The champion of the Southland Conference is pitted against any challenger team at-large during the first 5 years of the Independence Bowl. Two at-large teams were invited soon, and in 1995, the Independence Bowl began to feature any school in the southeastern conference against any opponent who wants to put up a challenge.
Regular matches between teams from the Big 12 and the southeastern conference (SEC) commenced since 1998. Other teams may join the bowl if those leagues do not have eligible teams like what happened in 2004 when Miami saw action instead of a SEC squad. If any of the Big 12 and the SEC shall fail to fully abide by their obligation to Independence Bowl in the 2008 and 2009 games, their replacement would be coming from eligible team from the Sun Belt Conference.
When the lawnmower brand Poulan (a division of AB Electrolux Home Products) sponsored the Independence Bowl in 1990, it was officially called the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl and dubbed by fans as the Weedwacker Bowl.
The quest for a stable sponsor ended in 21 August 2006 after PetroSun Inc. of Phoenix, Arizona agreed to take the sponsorship. This company is a provider of products and services to oil and gas suppliers. Thus, it was renamed PetroSun Independence Bowl. Independence Bowl tickets are now available for the 2008 match on December 28, 2008.
